As part of my leveling-up, I’m going to start re-releasing Hotel Lists that I have lots of updates for. The goal is to have all the hotel lists live on their own singular post, without anything else on it. We’re starting with Mexico. You may not have a trip on the horizon, but this is your Mexico hotel asset that forever lives in the archive. If you have no interest in Mexico, no worries, see you Sunday!

The original Mexico Hotel List was published on October 18th of last year. It was really my first true Hotel List. A deep dive into all regions in a country, extensive research, extensive curation. It was the beginning of the path to here, and I’m so grateful for that. The path has taught me a lot, and I’ve evolved naturally as time goes on. I can’t believe 90% of you were not subscribers when the OG list came out. I’m wowed weekly and truly grateful.

Originally, there were no explanations per hotel, just broken down by state. Now, there’s an explanation for everything, and still broken down by state but also area. Originally, there were 89 hotels on the list. Everything stayed, minus one that became a rental. 39 new hotels have gotten on the list, all for good reason. Mexico is magical. So diverse and so culture-rich. No matter how many times I’ve been, I’ll always go back, whenever I can.

The Mexico Hotel List

The 128 most special hotels all across Mexico. A true oxymoron, it’s an exhaustive curation. This is intended to be your singular source for hotels in Mexico. Whatever your budget, wherever you go. No sifting through hundreds of pages of options, or going to the same chain boutique hotels that let you transport locations but not really experience the country. Every hotel has a sentence (at least) summing it up. A photo curation of a 6-8 names per region. I’m trying to add further context whenever I can, while being a one-woman show.

I love Mexico. I love this list. I hope you do too! Happy Hoteling, you Good People with Good Taste :)

Baja California

  • Valle de Guadalupe & Close to the US Border

    • Bruma Wine Resort is a famed winery and restaurant with very cool rooms and a fantastic property.

    • La Villa del Valle leans slightly resort, but in the best way. Also on a working winery, with two pools and all the amenities.

    • Rancho La Puerta is a hidden gem spa hotel wellness getaway.

    • Encuentro Guadalupe is unique with minimalist stand-alone cabin-like rooms designed to make you feel the magic of the wildness.

  • Cabo Area

    • Las Ventanas al Paraiso has always been a favorite and likely always will be. Discretion at it’s finest, fantastic service and food and equally wonderful rooms and property.

    • Costa Palmas is a microcosm of its own on the east cape – part hotel, part homes, part community.

    • One&Only Palmilla has retained the magic it had pre-O&O acquisition – it’s absolutely lovely and luxurious. It’s cliffside, with no beach, but the pool has a fantastic view to make up for it.

    • Esperanza is now an Auberge property, which is quite the Cabo top hotel theme, but it’s equally as top-notch as ever. I’ve always thought it had the best views. And while the beach isn’t swimmable, the pool is right in front it’s dramatic rockiness, so you do get the beach feel.

    • Acre Resort is outside San José del Cabo and is sprawling - farm, hotel, all regenerative and very cool.

    • Waldorf Astoria Pedregal is on the list only because of it’s loyal following and perfect Pedregal position. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a gated community right outside downtown Cabo which gives the enviable ability to be on the hill overlooking the sea and secluded from the masses, but close to it all.

  • Todos Santos

    • Todos Santos Boutique Hotel is the new very well-dressed kid in town – it’s a must-stay for me.

    • Villa Santa Cruz just came out of its latest additions and renovations and is looking better than ever. A great choice for families and couples alike. Great use of color, great location.

    • Hotel San Cristóbal is a Bunkhouse property that’s a bit more grown up than other locations. It’s fun and fits in the town.

    • Desierto Azul is for minimalist Happy Hotelers.

    • Paradero is what some would say ushered in this latest wave of hospitality in Todos. It’s eco-everything, it was the hotel for about three years, and is still a fantastic luxury stay with great expanse. It’s not for me, but it’s for a lot of people!

    • Casa Santos is brutalist and lacks in soul for my tastes, but deserves a spot.

Misc

  • The White Lodge in La Fortuna is, to me, the way to experience “Cabo, but before”. Fantastic views, a sunken pit lobby, a ceremonial hut, and close access to great surf are the major draws.

  • El Perdido is somewhere I’m dying to stay. It’s a bit out of the way, but therein lies the magic. Wonderful design, extremely small, cool pool, and beaches are very close, even though it’s the desert.

  • Baja Club in lacks soul in it’s exterior architecture, but everything else I find to be enticing. The pool and restaurant are the main draws.

  • Rancho de las Cruces has a perfect private beach, outside La Paz. That’s the main point. And all the activities. And that it’s extremely family-friendly and all-inclusive but not monstrous or soulless. Is it perfect? No. But it’s fantastic to have on your radar.
